Ranking Factors that Matters to Search Engines

If you want to optimize your website then below are some on-page ranking factors which are going to help.

Google Rankings are really important nowadays considering the changing algorithms that affect traffic. Here are some factors that might help you improve your Google rankings.

1. Domain Age

This is not as impactful as other factors, but an older one outperforms a newer one. Although Google believes in fresh content, if your page is old but regularly updated, you will hold a slight edge over a newly created page with the same content.

2. Keywords in the domain name

Using a keyword in your domain name makes some difference, especially if it’s the first word. Domain names with keywords usually hold an edge over others.

3. Approachable design

Make sure your website is accessible from mobile and desktop. Google uses a mobile-first index that filters out websites that are not friendly to mobile users. If your websites cannot be viewed on mobile, definitely it’s not a good sign.

4. Core Web Vitals

Core Web Vitals is a major factor that affects your ranking. There are three Core Web Vitals – Largest Contentful Paint(LCP), First Input Delay (FID), and a Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) are part of Google’s page experience score.

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): This Measures the loading speed of your page’s main content. Upon landing on a page, the content should be loaded within 2.5 seconds.
  •  First Input Delay (FID): This Measures the time upon which users can interact with your page upon landing. It should occur within 100 milliseconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): This Measures the frequency at which users experience unexpected layout shifts, A CLS of less than 0.1 is recommended.

You can find your website’s CWV data in the “experience” section of your Google Search Console account.

A quicker website appears on the top of other websites. If your website isn’t fast, you will lose first-page ranking in SERPs.

Core Web Vitals can now be measured using the below tools:

  • Search ConsolePage
  • Speed Insights
  • Lighthouse
  • Chrome DevTools
  • Chrome UX Report
  • Web Vitals Extension
5. Internal Linking

Internal linking is one of the most important factors in Google rankings. It increases the crawlability of websites, so search engines can find all the internal pages of your website.

It helps Search Engines to understand site structure and allows users to navigate other intel pages. It also helps to pass link juice to other internal pages.

6. Content-Length

We might be living in an era where crisp content is preferred. However, the internet is a tricky place as it prefers lengthier content. Lengthy content has a wider breadth compared to brief articles. Study shows that the article with a word count between 2000 to 2500 gains the most organic traffic. Having said that, content quality does make a difference.

7. New & Updated Content

No matter what your website or page is about, you must update it regularly because Google loves fresh content. Original content ranks above others due to its uniqueness. Google shows recently updated websites at the top, especially for time-sensitive searches. Updating content means Google knows that the page is getting updated regularly.

8. Keywords in Content

Keywords work like a cheat code for google rankings. The entire industry of SEO works on finding the relevant keywords and adding them to the content. Target keywords are automatically highlighted during a search by users.

9. Grammar and Spelling

Users might mistype while searching for anything, but your website should have no spelling or grammatical errors. As per major studies, spelling errors lead to lower ranking as it does not match with the correct spelling. Although this claim is still debated.

10. Trending Topics

Websites with Trending topics have the best-ranking probability. This is due to frequent users trying to get some basic information. Websites that provide translation, currency conversion, measurement scale, converter, etc. These types of websites are used only for seconds but make a huge impact because of their usefulness.

11. Avoid broken Links

One major reason to keep your website updated is to avoid broken links. Sometimes redirecting links added to the page are broken due to third-party problems. This could result in affecting your Google ranking as Google AI assumes the website is abandoned.

12. Website Structure

If your website is difficult to navigate, it will hurt your ranking. A simple interface and homepage attract more viewers and improve your reach. Complicated pages observed reduced on-site time and popularity as well.

13. Comments

More comments mean more interaction. It is not rocket science to understand that interactive pages have become more popular among users. Try to upload interactive content that leads to more comments on your page and improves your ranking.

14. References and sources

Whatever data you put on your websites should be covered with credible sources or references. Google Quality Guidelines state that users go for sources as they need credibility along with information. Legitimate sources will help you attract more views.
